It has been working fine for the past few years but now the gdo trips the gfci whenever it s plugged in.

There is a garage door opener gdo plugged into the only outlet downstream from the gfci. If you look at the operation and maintenance manual you will see a slightly ominous note in general troubleshooting opener does not run that reads check for a non compatible gfci.
