The wiring is loose at the opener. Check that the wires are secure by gently tugging on them. You will find that the door will only move an inch or so in the close direction and reverse. Most switches have two wires.

To test the wires detach both from the switch and carefully touch them. Look for labeling such as vacation on the unit then press and hold this button. The transmitters remotes will not work to close the garage door.

The locking mechanism protects access to the garage by disabling the power unit. The problem is either due to a blocked path between the sensors dirty eyes loose wires at the sensors or at the motor head or just bad sensors. Depending on your opener you may have screw terminals or push in connectors.
